Macanudo Utilizes Tercio Aging for New Inspirado
Macanudo is releasing a new, limited-edition cigar to the Inspirado line. The new smoke called Macanudo Inspirado Tercio-Aged, unsurprisingly, features tercio-aged tobacco. Tercios are large bales made from the bark of the Royal Palm Tree. They are used to store tobacco and to develop flavor from the leaves as they age. Inspirado Tercio-Aged is set to arrive in stores in early April.
Macanudo Inspirado Tercio-Aged Blend & Product Information
Macanudo Inspirado Tercio-Aged features a Mexican San Andrés wrapper above an Indonesian binder and Dominican Piloto Cubano and Colombian filler tobaccos. Artisans aged the Dominican Piloto Cubano filler tobacco in tercios. Inspirado Tercio-Aged delivers rich, smooth smoke with hints of earth and white pepper. It is a medium-bodied cigar produced in the Dominican Republic.
Inspirado Tercio-Aged is available in two frontmarks: a classic Toro (6 X 54) and Churchill (7 X 49). Only 3,400 boxes were produced for U.S. consumption. Boxes and band art features the classic Macanudo logo with white, muted gold, cream, and beige patterns. Boxes include ten cigars per unit.
The Tercio-Aging Process
Aging tobaccos in tercios is an old-world process that has fallen out of favor in the cigar industry –– for the most part. Previously, Macanudo released a previous limited-edition Inspirado –– Palladium –– that featured tercio-aged tobacco. However, very few other cigar companies have utilized tercio aging for their tobacco products.
This is in part because creating tercios is a skill that relatively few professionals possess. The tercios, which look like large gift-wrapped boxes –– must be crafted and shaped by hand. What’s more, tobaccos are usually aged in tercios for a period of six months or more. So not only is the process laborious, but it is also time-consuming.
However, the results are incredible. The natural aging environment created by the palm tree bark covering allows the tobacco to develop unique and rich flavors that would otherwise be lost or diluted during a “normal” aging process.
