Dark Side of the Leaf: Steve Saka on Crafting the Perfect Cigar
Whenever I have Steve Saka in front of the camera, my strategy is pretty simple - ask a question and let Saka talk! It's usually a pretty good strategy. As Steve points out in this video, he knows a enough to be dangerous about lots of parts of the cigar making process. In my experience, he knows more than most about more of it than anyone realizes.
In this video, I decided to pick at Steve over the unusually high number of strong dark blends in his catalog. While many cigar makers are working to create a diverse catalog with lots of different wrapper leaves to 'fill out' the mild, medium, strong segments of the market, Steve has created some of the most sought-after Connecticut Broadleaf and San Andres blends we've ever seen. When I asked him about the clear leaning toward bold blends, he responded by taking me through a completely new part of cigar making process. This is the critical part of cigar making that happens before the rolling floor. It's the art of leaf selection where Steve Saka creates the foundation of his ultra hot brand of premium blends. Here's how he does it.
