Experiment gone awry

Cayman Cigar Company

So here's a story of what I was told and what I know. I'm curious on your perspective on what I did wrong.

What I was told: My brother-in-law went to the Cayman Islands for a work event. (yes, he's that type of guy and works for that type of company) As a gift, each person received a travel humidor with 3 cigars from Cayman Cigars. He doesn't smoke cigars so he left them in his desk drawer for about 18 months (ish). He gave them to me as a gift, knowing I would use the travel humidor and figured I would just throw away the cigars.

What I know: I thought it would be neat to try an experiment to see if I could save the sticks. They were obviously dry and brittle and not smoke-able at the time of delivery. I put them in a sealed bag with a 72% Boveda pack and placed them at the bottom of a sealed container to rest. My idea was to give them a year before smoking one; if that worked then I would smoke the others. I checked the pack to make sure it was still functional, replaced as needed and tried to forget about them. Well, a year is right around the corner and I was telling a friend about them and decided to check the progress: Mold. You can see the mold the picture but it was more extensive than it appears. Each cigar had it outside, inside, band, wrapper and foot - all were covered. They were no longer dried out or brittle and some of the wrappers had started to flake off as well. It may have been a lost cause from the start, but needless to say I was disappointed.

Note: the travel humidor is awesome and I use it all the time
