Padron 1964 Anniversary Superior Maduro

Smoked: Padron 1964 Anniversary Superior Maduro

Padron 1964 Anniversary Superior Maduro is a Nicaraguan puro The Anniversary series started in 1994 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Phillies blowing a 10 game lead in September and losing the NL Pennant to the St. Louis Cardinals. I miss baseball – when it was really baseball. 1964 was also the year Padron began making premium cigars by coincidence. The 1964 Anniversary Superior Maduro is box pressed and cloaked in a smooth deep brown Nicaraguan Maduro wrapper.

Wood, leather, spicy, mild hints of pepper, dark chocolate sweetness somewhere between fudge and sundae syrup, and dark roast coffee-espresso balanced to perfection. The second third adds earthy notes and an increase in pepper. The ever present chocolate is moving around from dark to milk chocolate to fudge brownies and any other chocolate concoction you’ve ever experienced. Now this is the definition of transitions and complexity. Give it an Italian mwahh! Would you expect anything less from a Padron? Now as backdrop as the pepper is on the palate it jumps out and lights up your nostrils on the retrohale. There’s some aging that shows in the tobacco. It’s bold and robust and still silky smooth, full bodied, and medium strength.

Construction was nearly flawless – perfect draw, burn dead even start to finish, plenty of smoke and only one cosmetic touchup. The only minor downside was the ash falling off a couple of times, but it held to an inch so no complaints.

I’m not even sure a review is warranted given the well deserved status of this brand and series. I assume there are already hundreds of reviews online. But there’s my two cents on the Padron 1964 Anniversary Superior Maduro.

BTW: When I removed the band I noticed a band under the band which slid off intact. My buddy who saves bands snapped it up off the table so now I don’t know it was a secondary band that the primary band slid over or it was some secret coded message from Padron I missed out on.
