Smoked: Wasabi Lancero

Being a big fan of Erik Espinosa’s Wasabi Robusto, I was looking forward to seeing how this 7.5 x 38 Lancero stacked up. I wasn’t disappointed.

Like its brother, this cigar sports a Habano cap. Why??? I guess Erik doesn’t like the taste of candela tobacco on his lips. Too bad, because I do. Or, maybe he wants it to stand out from the crowd. Either way, I was able to cut off most of the obtrusive, dark cap. And, also like its brother, its ingredients are undisclosed. Whatever.

This stick was so tasty that I frankly didn’t give a hoot whether I knew what tobaccos it contained or not. It’s often advertised as “Not your grandfather’s candela.” That's for sure. I remember enjoying many candela cigars back in the ‘70’s, and none of them were as spicy as this one.

Spices? Yes. Pepper? Yes. Neither of which were at all overpowering. I’ve never had green tea, but it’s supposed to taste like it. I have experienced the heady, sensuous aroma of corn flowering, having lived for many years basically in the middle of expansive cornfields in northern Illinois; throughout the first two thirds, that particular flavor and aroma made for one interesting and delightful smoke. I had never noticed that in the robusto. Other flavor notes included wet hay, grass, and during the final third, a hint of apple. The burn was perfect, although its draw was a bit tight for my liking. However, that wasn’t a problem; I did not need a draw tool to help open it up. Body was medium full, and its strength was mild.

It paired nicely with a dirty gin martini/garlic stuffed olives/rocks.

So, Erik, fine. Don’t tell us what’s inside, and cap it with Habano. I don’t care. This cigar is most enjoyable regardless.
