Smoked: EP Carrillo La Historia Dona Elena

EP Carrillo La Historia Dona Elena is box-pressed with Nicaraguan and Dominican filler, an Ecuador Sumatra binder and a sandy oily Mexican San Andres wrapper with faintly visible seams and veins.

The cigar sports two bands and a blue footer. The primary band is multi-colored artwork with “La Historia” proclaimed in cursive. The secondary band is smaller simply stating “Perez Carrillo.”

Oak and cedar, musty earth, mineral/chalk, leather, spice, pepper, cocoa and mixed nuts. Sprinkle in some notes of chocolate, fruit, coffee, cinnamon, grain/doughy bread, and hay during the second third. Midway through there were a few puffs of caramel, citrus – orange with some creaminess like an orange creamsicle, for those who remember that summer treat.

The spice kicks up more pepper by the final third. At that point I think I tasted a puff of cherry. There is quite an array of flavors in this stick. The retrohale is heavy on the pepper – not overwhelming but not subtle.

There was a major construction issue following ignition. The wrapper tore at the foot to about a half an inch. I was able to smoke past the wrapper tear. Not daring to touchup for fear of dissembling the entire cigar. Success! The draw was a shade too tight. A couple of toothpick pokes kept it open for most of the smoke. Solid smoke production and dark grey & white ash that somehow defied the wrapper tear until it fell off along with some of the combustion line. I was fortunate. The burn line evened out with no further issues. Whew! Now I could taste more flavors.

EP Carrillo La Historia Dona Elena is a very good medium-full bodied & strength cigar. I’m delighted I gave it a second try. Despite the construction issue with the wrapper tear this was an enjoyable smoke.
