For newcomers to the hobby, smoking a cigar for the first time can feel intimidating. Knowing how to cut the cigar, how to light it, how to store any cigars left over — and what tools you need to do those things — may not always be obvious! Luckily, you only need a few essential accessories to enjoy a cigar to the fullest. Here’s a quick list of five accessories every cigar lover should have in their lounge.

#1 A Good Cutter

If you find yourself in a pinch, you can technically cut a cigar with any sharp object, such as a knife or scissors. (You can even bite the cap off with your teeth should you feel bold.) However, making an incorrect or imprecise cut can damage the cigar on a fundamental level and seriously affect the smoking experience. That’s why it’s vital to always have a quality, sharp cutter on hand. We prefer the “standard” straight cut, but you may opt for a V-Cutter or a punch cut — depending on your preference and what cigar you smoke.

#2 A Quality Lighter

Look, we love lighting up a premium cigar with matches. And under the right circumstances, matches are all you need to light your smoke. But if you’ve ever been on the golf course or a friend’s porch and tried to light a cigar with matches against even the lightest of breezes, you know it can present a real challenge. As such, it’s a clever play to invest in a solid torch lighter for just such occasions. Performing a clean, uniform light-up allows your cigar to burn as it was intended, and precision torch lighters are often the surest bet for providing your cigar with the spark it needs.

#3 A Humidor

A humidor is a big purchase in a cigar lover’s journey. Buying a humidor will enable you to enjoy more than the odd cigar here or there; instead, humidors let cigar enthusiasts store dozens (or even hundreds) of cigars in a safe, well-regulated place for years. When purchasing your first humidor, though, we recommend going for something relatively small and cost-effective. Acrylic and desktop humidors are great options, easy to set up/maintain, and will often hold 20-50 cigars. Oh, and they make great gifts for the budding cigar lover in your life.

#4 Cigar Ashtray

There’s an art to ashing a cigar, and a cigar-specific ashtray is the ideal vessel for ash. Not only do many cigar ashtrays feature beautiful designs, but they include large enough “holders” to fit a cigar. It may not be the first item on your purchase list, but be sure to pick up a cigar ashtray before you light up your next smoke.
