Cigar Reviewed: Camacho Triple Maduro

Let me start with the caveat that I love full body cigars and maduro. So, I expected this was the cigar for me and I was right. The wrap is from Mexico, binder from Honduras and the filler is a blend of Honduran, Dominican, and Brazilian. One of the few negatives is the band. Darn thing covers 2/3 of the cigar and it is a shame. The wrap is a deep brown with an inviting oily sheen. I was able to get the giant band off and saw some small veins and tight seems with a well-applied double cap. The smell was earth, barnyard hay, cocoa, and caramel. It smelled sweet. Used a guillotine to cut and took a pre-light draw which gave me rich earth, dark chocolate, and some raisin. This was an incredibly densely packed stick, so the draw was very tight. This is my only real criticism of this cigar, I like some resistance but this was beyond reasonable. The initial flavors are earth, hay, chocolate and pepper. This is a deep, rich cigar with a medium-full start. I hoped the draw would open up, but it didn't as I went through the first third. Earth and oak are the main players in the first third with some chocolate and a good bit of white pepper, especially on retrohale. Even the smell from the resting cigar is enticing. But don't smoke this bad boy too fast, it has a real punch. Second third has a creamy mouth feel and hints of coffee. The ash is fairly light with some dark streaks and falls about every inch or so. The burn in the first third was a little wavy and needed one touch up. This stick gives a lot of smoke but burns incredibly slowly. The pepper has receded and dark roast coffee become more pronounced. There is still some chocolate but is more milk chocolate than bittersweet. Retrohale has some of the pepper and fruit, raisin or apricot. Burn evened up and haven't needed any more touch ups. The draw has loosened a little in the final third. The earthiness is ever present but now I'm getting leather to go with the coffee. Retrohale still has that dark fruitiness and pepper. Final few puffs on the nub and the chocolate has returned. This baby took me just a touch over 2 hours, longest ever for a robusto, at least for me. My head is spinning and I love it. This cigar started and medium-full, went to full and stayed there until the end. I know some will hate it, but I am smitten. An all maduro cigar was genius and proves that too much of a good thing is a lie.
