Cigar Reviewed: My Father La Opulencia

Smoked at: West Chester, Ohio

My Father La Opulencia is a box-pressed cigar covered in a smooth, not oily dark brown Mexican Rosado Oscuro wrapper. Quite unique.

Flavor profile: creamy, cocoa, oak, leather, hint of licorice and a sweetness like a 3 Musketeers. There’s a hint of coffee and evolving spices – cinnamon at times. Notes of tea, vanilla and jelly – like a jelly donut – pop in during the second third. Floral notes jump in on one puff – never to return. The oak blends into cedar and hickory as the stick progresses. Pepper and spice mix in well with the core flavors. They actually accelerate and retreat through stages of the smoke. The pepper is subtle, which is fine with me, and the flavors play well together. The transitions and complexity are impressive. There’s a lot going on here.

The cold draw is a little tight but that does not impede a generous smoke output. The burn line is near perfect. The ash holds on tight to about an inch. Only dropped once. Rolls off effortlessly.

I would characterize this cigar as medium-full body, medium strength. It paired well with my morning coffee due to its creaminess, cocoa and general sweetness, but it’s a little “heavy” (for lack of a better term) for coffee. It may pair better with a Highland or Island scotch.
